Phase 1 Early Treatment in Brooklyn

A Healthy Start for Growing Smiles

At Mizrahi Orthodontics, Phase 1 treatment guides jaw growth in children, usually ages 7 to 10, and fixes problems that are harder to correct later.

What Is Phase 1 Treatment?

Phase 1 is early orthodontic care for children, usually between ages 7 and 10, while some baby teeth remain. It takes advantage of your child’s natural growth to guide the jaws and make room for adult teeth.

Many children don’t need early treatment, and we simply monitor growth with periodic checkups. When treatment is needed, starting at the right time can make later care simpler and shorter.

When Does a Child Need It?

Common reasons for Phase 1 treatment include:

  • Crossbites
  • Severe crowding
  • A narrow upper jaw
  • An underbite
  • Habits like thumb sucking that affect the teeth or jaws

Your orthodontist will explain whether your child needs treatment now or can wait.

What Does It Involve?

Phase 1 often uses a palate expander, a partial set of braces, or another appliance, usually for six to 18 months.

We keep visits comfortable and explain every step, so you and your child always know what to expect.

What Comes Next?

After Phase 1, we monitor your child’s growth while the rest of their adult teeth come in.

A second phase with full braces or aligners may follow, and it is often shorter and simpler thanks to the work done in Phase 1.

When Should My Child Have a First Check?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. Early visits let us spot jaw growth or crowding problems while they are easiest to correct.
